There is a tendency among seo marketers to work at the extreme ends of the keyword and keyword phrase creation spectrum. Many times, their words will end-up being either to simple to describe a product or service or too complicated for the typical searcher to think to use. As with just about anything, a moderate attempt at using the appropriate keyword or phrase is needed to gather the desired results. The difficult part, however, is to figure out what is the moderate point in the spectrum and what it is that you are trying to achieve.
Before getting to the actual keywords and phrases, consider what the relevant content is trying to do, past selling and informing. If you are going to be writing several content pieces; will they form a unified whole or stand alone as an individual article? Will the article depend on sources and links or possibly outside testimony? You may also want to consider if it will reflect on the organization you are writing for as a whole? The thought here is that the keywords and phrases will be taken in a particular context. Words and phrases taken in differing contexts mean differing things. Because of this, thoughtful consideration of a word or phrase can mean the difference between; a solid ranking and oblivion, an educated customer or just a passing glance from a searcher thinking something entirely different,
A basic product or service
One of the better ways of starting the thought process might be by consider what it is that is being described and sold, whether product or service. What is this thing? Start by stripping what it is down to the bare bones and give it a one word single name.
A specific product or service
As any seo marketer will tell you, a one word keyword will not get you very far. One word just won’t describe many things sufficiently in today’s web world. To obtain a high rank or the result you would like means being more thoughtful and a bit more specific. This is because you now need to make sure that the one word being used describes the product but also how the second word making the first word specific is going to; make use of incoming links (.gov and .edu), how the combination of the two reflects on the organization as a whole with its specific goals and requirements and what it is saying and asking the searcher to do and remember. So, if “apple” is used as the first word and it is made to become “Organic Washington State Delicious red apples” how does that specific keyword phrase affect the word “apple”, the relevant content, its rank, the users perception of the company and its products, the companies selling strategy (possibly export), pricing and most importantly sales.
A chart can help
Pulling together thoughtful keyword phrases means affecting many people, not the least of whom is you. But from a less self-centered point of view consider diagramming a keyword phrase the same way you might diagram a sentence. In this sense think about:
Organic Washington State Delicious red apples
Apples – the company does something regarding apples (Relevance)
The apples are from Washington State which is known for the best apples (Brand-Washington State apple)
I’ve had Delicious apples and they are sweet and juicy (Brand-Delicious)
The apples must taste good because it says they’re Delicious (thoughtful description)
They’re organic (chemical free thoughtful description, relevance)
Red apples not those tart tasting apples (thoughtful description, relevance)
We Asians love Washington State apples and they ship (Export, relevance)
Now that the concept of Delicious apples is established and thoughtful keywords are doing their work, variations on the theme can be added to emphasize whatever it is that needs to be emphasized. A series of related keyword phrases may be added in additional articles to enhance your ranking in the same but different phrase structure.
Thoughtful consideration says more then you think
There is a reason that web-crawlers want article content to be relevant. They want the searcher to get what they want in the shortest amount of time. If the keywords are thoughtful in nature they will be relevant because they are taking the readers “wants and needs” into consideration. In this instance, the searcher likely wants to order or learn about apples. You have apples as the relevant word in the phrase. The searcher may or may not have known that there is a Delicious apple variety but now he does. You are giving the searcher what they want in a thoughtful relevant way quickly. Don’t think that a web-crawler won’t notice this if you follow all the other rules. It will see that the various other thoughtful words are also being hit upon as people search. Ultimately, this is what will make your rank higher and your sales grow.
